The results of Composition Competition “Art and Violence”

The subject of the contest was a work for an instrumental trio: piano, percussion and one woodwind instrument of a choice (up to 12 min.) reflecting on the idea of a connection between different forms of violence and art and its artistic interpretation.

have judged 27 scores from composers from around the world: Brazil, China, Hong-Kong, Ireland, Poland, UK, USA, Russia, Sweden, and decided to give:

I PRIZE: Olgierd Juzala-Deprati (Poland),for ci-sza for soprano saxophone, percussion and piano

II PRIZE: Tomasz Szczepanik (Poland), for inquietudine for G flute, percussion and piano

The jury would also like to give a honorary mention to Marcílio Onofre from Brazil for his outstanding work (IN)vasion for flute, percussion and piano.

OLGIERD JUZALA-DEPRATI

composer, born 1994 in Krakow. He studied composition in the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków with Prof. Marcel Chyrzyński, and also as student exchange program scholar on the University of Louisville with dr Krzysztof Wołek. In addition Olgierd Deprati received a Master of Arts degree in music theory.

Olgierd Deprati is especially interested with connections between music and plastic arts, space of silence in music, and exploration of extended playing techniques. He gladly use onomatopoeics effects and sound symbolism.

He is a winner of 2nd Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition for Young Composers for Szepty for string quartet. Among polish awards Olgierd Deprati has received 2nd prize for …breath for four violins in the 62nd Tadeusz Baird Competition for Young Composers and 2nd prize for Pogłosy for violin solo, prepared piano and string trio in the 16th Tadeusz Ochlewski Composition Competition in Cracow. He also received honorable distinction at 4th International Sinfonietta per Sinfonietta Composition Competition. Since 2021 he has been a member of the Youth Polish Composers’ Union.
